Why didn’t you tell me it was National Donut Day?
Earlier, I sent that email to buy.com. I received the following response:
Hello Jim Jannotti,
Thank you for contacting Buy.com.
This is in reference to your email regarding placing an order #xxxxxxx.
Please note that we do not except orders payed through paypal for music download. And also please allow the order #xxxxx to process completely.

So I counter responded with this:
Dear name withheld,
The lack of paypal acceptance (note correct spelling), though not clearly explained during the transaction process, was only a small but frustrating part of an incredibly aggravating experience. Forcing me to use Internet Explorer was another, forcing me to create a password and account was another, and the DRM that came with the music added insult to injury.
If buy.com expects to stay in business on the web, it had better become a lot more user friendly. Dropping the assumption that your users are criminals would be a start. Explaining acceptable (note correct spelling) payment options during a purchase would be another. Shall I send a list with more suggestions? On second thought, don’t answer that.
Your email back to me wherein you cavalierly inform me of something which is now obvious is yet another insult to my intelligence. Please don’t contact me again. The joy I will get from never using buy.com and from telling all my friends to do the same is all I need from the company going forward.
Thanks again,
Jim
Did I mention that my iTunes purchase went swimmingly?
I just sent an email to buy.com that went something like this…
As you can tell by my order history I had a whole bunch of trouble with my purchase of one song from your music catalog.
This was without doubt the single most unpleasant online shopping experience I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a few. It began when you forced me to use Internet Explorer to complete my purchase. The unpleasantness continued throughout, and even after the transaction when I learned that the DRM came free with this track.
Rest assured I will not be back. Thanks ever so much for nothing.
On the other hand my purchase of the DRM free recording of Getting Closer by Paul McCartney, which I’ve been searching for online for about a year, came off without a hitch. Thanks iTunes, keep on rockin’!
