keyed up (the second, but not final, installment)

As one astute reader noted, I should have read the owner’s manual before I locked myself out of my running Teal Tank yesterday. Only I did read the owner’s manual and it did not contain anything about the doors locking three seconds after you start the engine.

But because I sometimes misremember things I perused the manual after the locksmith left with most of my money and my firstborn. I thereby confirmed that there is no mention of the incomprehensible door locking nonsense. In addition, I learned that using the key to lock the driver’s door will lock all the other doors as well.

I separated the key from the remote (so I will always be able to access the car no matter what), then went out to the Passport and inserted the key into the driver’s door keyhole and…

… it wouldn’t turn. The key would not turn the lock either way. Turning the key over didn’t make a difference. I then checked it in the passenger door and the back hatch. Nothing. I had only used the remote to unlock the doors until this moment and as you can imagine, I was a little surprised.

But I had to deliver the mail so further deliberations had to wait.

While out on the route I decided that since the dealership where I bought the Passport was on the way back to the post office, I would stop in and ask about this key strangeness. Hey was as surprised to hear my tale as I was to be living it.

After a call to Honda and to Isuzu (the company that built the Passport for Honda), we made absolutely no progress, but the Isuzu guy said he would try to get a new key cut based on the VIN number.

My dealer called me later on to tell me that the Isuzu guy’s plan didn’t work and so we had no way yet to procure a key that actually, you know, opens the vehicle. He said he was going to try to work it all out before “you need to get a locksmith” [note his use of pronoun].

I actually had a hard time sleeping the first few days…, it was like I lost a very important part of me.

 

I found it amazing how attached I had grown.. However, since I am an adaptable being, I managed… After a few days, I was able to sleep through the night

 

I am sure that in a month or so it’ll be like all of this never happened.
