The Owen J Roberts School Board was in the process of defying the will of the people when I left their meeting. They had already rejected a motion to rescind their decision to fire Myra Forrest without cause, which they made without prior notice and passed last week. Three of the five who voted for the motion had been ousted in the primaries and this vote came at the first school board meeting after that primary election.

As I said, they had rejected a motion to rescind that vote that was presented by one of the minority members of the board. This after dozens of audience members commented. More than a thousand people packed the auditorium of Owen J Roberts High School to capacity. Many who had not planned to speak stood in favor of Myra. A couple of people actually stood up to speak in favor of the board’s decision to fire her… literally, a couple. I think they were husband and wife. At least they had the same last name. They get props from me for bravery, though no props for making any sense.

Not making sense however, seems to be what this board does best. After their constituency, all of it, parents, teamsters, superintendents from other districts, students, administrators from this district and others, as well as teachers stood to Myra Forrest’s defense, they voted along the same lines not to rescind their vote from last week.

When I left they were hearing public discussion on a motion to hire Myra Forrest back as interim superintendent (since they have to buy out her contract anyway!) and it looked like the crowd might riot. They were pissed!

I was too but the world will keep on turning, Lord willing, Myra will get a job for more money in a school district that actually appreciates her work, and I will start attending school board meetings, hopefully gaining a reputation as a royal PIA!
