from whence i came

I’m going back into ministry.

I tried three or four different ways of writing the first sentence, and decided to just say it. You may remember at the end of ‘07 I mentioned that this year would be full of change and that I was anxious about how things would turn out for my family.

More recently, I did a memorial service for a friend that reminded me of my purpose in life.

More than a year ago when it seemed inevitable that our current pastor and housemate Will would be moving and that we might wind up homeless and underemployed, I began a process in our denomination that will someday result in me becoming what we call a “licensed local pastor.” Because last year’s postal and writing workload was pretty heavy, I made slow progress. Ultimately I finished the first steps toward becoming a ministry candidate about two months ago.

On the very day that I finished the initial work and met with Will (the pastor of the church that is sponsoring me in ministry), our local superintendent called and asked Will about the possibility of appointing me to a nearby church that had requested a transition to a part time appointment. Following a meeting with the local committee on ministry in late March, the superintendent and I met privately. He said he definitely wanted to send me to this particular church but he needed ‘a couple of weeks’ to work out the details. “A couple of weeks” is ministry-speak for ‘forever.’

Today, eight weeks later, he called me. The next step, he said, is for me to appear again before the committee so they can certify me as a lay pastor. The church is Temple United Methodist Church and it’s only about five miles from where I currently live. In fact, it’s on rural route 6, which I deliver from time to time. The appointment comes with housing at their parsonage plus a salary.

The post office job? I’m keeping that. I’m also keeping the writing gig for the magazine. I will be very busy, but it’ll be more fun than sitting at home doing nothing, which I’ve had more than enough of lately, thanks.

I’ll share more later, but I wanted to take a moment now to thank three very good friends who I asked to be my prayer support over the last couple of months. I spent a fair amount of time praying over this whole thing, even about who to ask to pray for me. Those I asked did and are still doing a wonderful job; offering both encouragement and challenge as needed in addition to their faithful prayers. So thank you Eric, Randy, and Brett. Incidentally, Randy told me that he recruited his wife Carol to pray and I’m incredibly grateful for her as well.

Now I’m inviting you to pray along, if you are a praying person. If you’re not then hey, now’s a great time to start!

Gosh, I think I need to start another blog post category…

Whew, I’m glad that’s finally out in the open! ;-)

It’s been my privilege to partner with you and the others in praying for God’s will to be done in this situation, but I’m even happier to share it with a wider group.

This is exciting stuff. Absolutely can’t wait to see how it works out – I’m anticipating some amazing things!

I will do my best to keep you in my prayers. I was going to recommend my church out in Conshohocken since we’ve got our senior pastor leaving but I’m Presbyterian (PCA). :-\ I will pray that things work out for you and your family.

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? … “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

(I posted this more for me than you.) :)

I’m glad to see things worked out. Your family will have a roof over their heads and you’ll make enough money. You’ve wisely kept your options open. If ministry is what you want to do then more power to you. I do hope you’ll keep blogging as I really enjoy reading your post. Congrats on things turning out well. Cheers! :-)

That’s wonderful! I’ll be praying here.

And busy always beats being at loose ends…especially if you’re busy doing what you’re meant to be doing.

Congratulations, Jim! Further proof, if proof is needed, that amazing things happen when you ask Him. You chose your prayer partners wisely. :-)

Quite a lot of life changes. Good luck to you! Life in a parsonage seems so, English!

I live in one now and I’ve never thought of it that way. Though since the new pasonage is right across the street from the church & my current home is more than a mile from church, I’m probably missing out on much of the English effect (or is it affect?).

Congratulations Jim.

Wow. That’s a really cool thing that God’s doing. Can’t wait to see where it leads you!

Jim,

Glad to hear it, I think you have some great gifts that will be utilized in this new position. Can’t wait to hear more.

Craig

Awesome to hear! So glad to see God moving in your life. Will definitely be praying.

When will you find the time to blog?

I don’t know. Midnight?
