Roy Scheider.

When you hear that name, no doubt you think of Chief Brody of the Amity Island Police and his almost single handed killing of two murderous eating machines in Jaws I and II.

The first image I get is the final scene of Sorcerer, my own favorite Scheider flick, about a group of exiles who transport nitro over treacherous terrain, both physical and psychological, in order to deliver it to the site of an oil fire.

Roy Scheider passed away Sunday at 75. While many of you might choose watch Jaws in his memory, I think I’ll try to find a copy of Sorcerer instead.

Was not aware of Sorcerer, but I’ll watch just about anything Will Friedkin grinds out, particularly if Scheider is the star. The first film I think of when I think “Scheider” is Marathon Man. I read the book before I saw the movie, and pictured someone very different from RS. But when I finally watched the movie, the choice made perfect sense. That’s the sort of actor he was, and it seems a shame he was usually consigned to “character” roles.

I remember him best from ‘2010′. My little brother and I watched that and ‘2001′ over and over again when we were kids. That may or may not explain some things.
