UPDATE: Check out this blog full of Ikea hacks. It includes Zach’s axe hack attack .
Let’s get the linkage out of the way first before I editorialize: I found this article at a blog called Make. They found it at BoingBoing, and the item itself can be found for sale at Zachary Custom Electric Guitars.
The guitar of which I speak is known only by its number, 120300 but it’s got a unique story. It is made one third of a $15 tabletop from Ikea. Here is what the designer says about his creation…
I bought one of their unfinished end tables for $15 and I can get three guitar tops from it. What a shame that they would use such amazing “tone-wood” for their cheap furniture. Its a sacrilege.
Indeed. I’m sure the guitar absolutely screams! I’m sure if I were to play one lick on it, I’d be sold. Well, not ’sold’ exactly since this axe retails at $1500. You read that right! That’s about 10 days worth of mail delivery on route 7 (before taxes).
Now, the guitar I own currently is an american made Fender Stratocaster, set up for studio use by the best guitar guy in Cleveland, OH… that would be Kurt Wright… A name producer or two virtually swooned over the sound of this guitar, especially when it’s hooked into one of these. I’m sure it sounds even better when someone who can actually play is using it. Listen to this clip to hear the guitar in action, you’ll hear it in the opening riff, and it’s also front and center in the mix during the verses. (Buy the CD at cdbaby while you’re at it.)
How much green do I have invested in this guitar, including set up work and pick up replacement done by Mr. Wright? Are you ready? $500–actually it’s a little less than that but I don’t care to dig up the receipt from Kurt’s shop. I got the guitar itself for $250, and sold the one I had at the time for more than that.
So fifteen hundred bucks may be a bargain for a pimped out Ikea tabletop, but not a bargain I’m willing to take advantage of.
On the other hand, if you have the necessary lettuce just laying around and you want to send this guitar my way (I’ll pick up the shipping, I’m generous like that), I’ll be happy to let you know just how good it sounds.
